Lift allows the aircraft to remain aloft during flight. The air moving above the wing creates a pressure difference between the upper and lower sections, causing the wing to gravitate towards the low pressure area. The airflow must be fluid and uniform throughout the wing which is impossible with the formation of the ice layer. This accumulation of ice and snow disrupts and distorts this airflow.
